Almost two decades ago, at the turn of the 1980s, a German consultant, while visiting the Ng Family's liquor distillery in Muar, Johore, was fascinated with the shafts of rubber wood being used as fuel to stoke the distilling vats.

The German visitor felt there was a more valuable role for the wood and convinced the Ng brothers to ship a container of it to his homeland for research and experimentation.

A year later, the rubber wood returned as incredibly hardy and impressive looking table-tops - the Germans had succeeded in transforming one of Malaysia's most abundant resources into a superior product, thereby giving the Ng's an opportunity to diversify their business.

This was the birth of Muar Hardboard Tops, manufactured and distributed by Kian Sendirian Berhad, a company established for this new business and named after the patriarch of the family, Mr. Ng Chek Kian.

It wasn't long before the company was designing fancy table legs to match the rubber wood table-tops, affording the family an opportunity to invest and make headway in a young but fast-developing furniture industry in Malaysia.

Today, Kian is led by members of the Ng family as well as other dynamic recruits from outside the family, creating an awesome combination of talent and drive.
