1983
Kian made its first step in the furniture industry as a wholesaler of tables and chairs. some of our first customers were hawker stalls, restaurant, schools, canteen & the odd furniture dealer.

1989
Cheng Giap was set up with the purpose of manufacturing metal furniture.

1990
Kian positioned itself as a specialist in mixed furniture, e.g. rubber-wood & metal combination, in the very competitive furniture market.

1991
Kian made another bold step by participating for the first time ever in the Singapore Furniture Show, which led to exports to countries like Australia, Brunei, Canada, Japan, and Singapore.

1992
The range of products being manufactured by Cheng Giap was extended to wooden and metal beds.

1994
Making yet another bold step, Kian launches Homelife - Malaysia's 1st lifestyle furniture store.

1995
The second Homelife store was opened.

1996
To meet our customer's needs, our R&D division looked to their needs and based their designs to meet them.

1997
Kian expanded its furniture manufacturing by acquiring a second factory. Mastalin - based in Muar, Johor has a built -up space of 64,000 sq. ft. and specialized in designing dining sets.

1998
A third factory was acquired. Kian Yip, a 103,000sq. Ft. manufacturing plant with a staff force of 300 strong working 24 hours in shifts and specializing in wooden dining sets, beds and bedroom accessories.

Kian Contract was establish to service the commercial segment of the industry, which includes eateries, educational establishments, and the hospitality industry.

1999
Kian Contract Manufacturing factory was expanded with an addition of 83,000 sq ft, focusing on the development and manufacturing of commercial furniture for the domestic and international markets.

Cheng Giap also saw an expansion to 126,000 sq ft.

Kian at this point saw an export rate of 180 containers monthly to over a total of 89 countries worldwide and a total work force of 862.

2000
Kian entered the new millennium with a total manufacturing space of 426,000 sq ft over 5 factories with the support of a 45,000 sq ft distribution center.

Focus on customers remains of utmost importance as we evolve from manufacturing and export to include retail, contract and domestic wholesale.

Kian emerged as the top organization in the Enterprise 50 nominations, beating 114 enterprises in Malaysia.

2003

In a bid to revive a flagging domestic wholesale business, Kian found a strategic alliance in a 50-year furniture retail licensing system from Germany and formed a new company – Garant Mobel Marketing (M) Sdn Bhd. Now known within the Kian family as GMM, it value-adds with marketing, visual merchandising and product design, to the retail  members.

2005

Due to global trends, Kian underwent a major re-alignment of her manufacturing activities. Kian’s metal furniture plant in Malaysia was re-located to China, and now known as Kian Design Manufacturing – specializing in stainless steel and cast iron furniture.

 Kian won 2nd placing in the “Emerging Brand Award”.

 Kian Contract was set up in Shanghai .
